green building & energy-smart upgrades

Building science and technology has advanced hugely in recent years, meaning it is now cheaper and easier than ever to build green and have a home that is comfortable, sustainable and cheaper to run.

Even small changes in a buildings design can have a huge impact on its performance.

More and more people are choosing to build green, and although North Americans have a lot of catching up to do, European building science is having a big influence on how we do things across the pond.

Our team keeps up-to-date with the latest design and construction techniques in order to create homes as efficiently as possible, with minimal impact on the environment and your wallet.

We understand the changes that make a difference and will get you a good return on your investment through reduced utility bills and a more comfortable environment in your home.

We offer blower-door testing and infra-red thermal imaging (IRT) to survey the building and identify air-leaks and problem spots, and then correct them.

At the lower end of the price scale, basic upgrades can include upgrading of insulation to achieve better R-Values, identifying leaks in the air-barrier  and correcting them, installing more energy efficient windows and doors.

Mid-range upgrades can include more advanced building envelope systems with good air barriers and deeper framed walls to allow more insulation.  Blown-in cellulose loft insulation, spray foam and other high-performing insulation in key areas, more energy efficient appliances, Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV) and triple-glazed windows.  This can be done in conjunction with blower door and IRT testing.

High-end upgrades are often aimed at reaching Passive House (Passivhaus) or similar standards (See our Passive House & Near-Zero Homes page for more info.)

This involves careful planning and design in order to create a highly-efficient building consisting of various systems to achieve maximum efficiency, often including renewable energy systems such as solar thermal, PV and wind.

These always involve rigorous testing at various stages and very careful design and construction techniques.
